Description

Inventory number ST2241. Date: ca. 1900 Broderie anglaise of the object. Child’s Apron or Pinafore, for a (school) child of about seven years old, made of gray-white cotton ticking. Features a round neckline with a wide, square flat collar trimmed with a border of machine-made broderie anglaise. The long sleeves, gathered at the top and tapering toward the wrists, are also finished with a broderie anglaise trim. The front is decorated with three wide flat pleats at the center. Two patch pockets are positioned at hip level, trimmed with broderie anglaise at the top and tapering to a point at the bottom. The entire hemline is bordered with a strip of broderie anglaise. The square collar continues at the back. The back has a wide flat pleat on either side of the center-back opening. The apron fastens at the back with two white mother-of-pearl buttons—one at the neck and one slightly below—and ties at the sides with two wide strips of gray-white ticking.
